In this article, we shall go through five reasons why you are eating greedily and excessively, why you are overindulging on food, why you may be eating gluttonously and ravenously. Overeating is an interesting topic and a subject matter of today’s modern society.
Most of us think that we eat because have lack of discipline or lack of willpower but this is not the case. Actually, eating more food than your body needs, is not the problem, it is truly a symptom of something else that is going on for you. So, here, we are exploring some of the avenues that might be worth looking at.
#1 Lack of awareness
Simply put it, you are not present when you are eating so your brain is unable to register the pleasure and the nourishment that comes along with the eating experience. Thus, even if you are not physically hungry any more the brain will still say “hungry”.
In those situations, you really need to bring your attention back to yourself and back to the plate so that you can get the full eating experience.
#2 Skipping meals
The body loves homeostasis, it is always craving and looking for a balanced state. So, think of your physical hunger as a pendulum. If it goes too far on one direction, it will some swinging back with vengeance in the opposite direction.
So, often times, if we skip meals, if we go too far past physical hunger that can lead to gormandizing.
#3 Attempting to distress
Within 30 seconds of chewing and swallowing your food the body releases chemicals that automatically put the body into a state of relaxation. So, chewing your food is not only relaxing but it’s a great way to release energy.
Therefore, if you do not practice other tools for distressing like reading a journal, or exercising or going out in the nature, eating can be a really quick fix way to into that state of relaxation but very temporary.
#4 Feeling grounded
When there is something that goes on in your life that has the form of transition or vulnerability or usually something that represents the unknown, we tend to reach for more food to help create the experience of feeling more grounded at a time when we are not feeling grounded. But, remember that a feeling is nothing but a vibration in your body.
So, if you are eating more food and you literally, physically weigh yourself down, this feeling will feel as if it is less intense, at least temporarily while you are falling. But, unfortunately, when your body manages to digest all that food you still have this grounded sensation.
#5 Numbing out
Sometimes, if we have a feeling or a situation in our life that we don’t want to look at or we don’t want to deal with, binging on food and overeating can be a wonderful distraction. It does not only divert our attention from the problem at hand that we don’t want to do it but it also leaves us with a whole brand new problem that we can put our attention on. We have no self-control, we have no self-discipline and we can put all our control on something else.
So, the nest time, you are sitting down a bag of potato chips because you do not feel like dealing with your problem (job issues, personal problems, marital matters, etc), do not call yourself an overeater but just admit that you do not want to deal with the situation at hand. You do not want to feel your feelings at that very moment.
